So What’s the REAL Problem With the Canadiens?

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know everything about the Habs. I’m probably not the biggest fan that you know, I wasn’t even old enough in 1993 to remember our Stanley Cup victory and I probably can’t name you many statistics, but does that make me any less of a fan? I support the team in every aspect possible; I watch as many games as I can on TV, I go to whatever games I can get tickets for, I buy memorabilia, I play Mise-o-Jeu and bet for them (not such a good idea lately) and more importantly, I stand by them no matter what.

The only thing that makes me sicker than seeing the Canadiens struggle the way they are now is seeing the reactions of fans all around the city. What the hell is wrong with you people? At the beginning of the season, Carey Price was a god among men, and nobody would dare speak a negative word about him. Now after a rough patch in his season, he’s been abandoned by the same fans that helped him rise to stardom, and the status quo has gone from being overly obsessed with Carey Price to thinking of clever jokes to mock him.

Take this gem of a Facebook status:

Well aren’t you creative. This joke wasn’t funny in Happy Gilmore, and I hate to break it to you but it didn’t get any funnier 10 years later.

This is just one of about 35 Facebook statuses blasting the Canadiens since their 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Now this wouldn’t really bother me so much if it wasn’t for the fact that about a month ago, these same people cheered on the Canadiens and their run for 1st place, and cheered even harder for the Canadiens last season and their “Strive for 25″.

Yet now, these same fans are ready to disown the team that they support. It makes no sense to me. Bipolar disorder much?

The Canadiens will break out of this slump, I have no doubt about it. And when they do, prepare for the plethora of updates in your News Feed talking about how much everyone loves the Habs and how we’re going to win the cup and about how amazing Price/Kovalev/Kostitsyn is.

To be a fan of a team means to support them unconditionally. Your team loses a few games? No big deal. They get knocked out early in the playoffs? Better luck next season. They trade away some good players for draft picks? In Bob we trust. The organization openly commits genocide? We can learn to live with it. That’s what being a true fan is all about.

There’s a difference between criticizing your favorite team, and being a hypocritical douchebag. Unfortunately, many people don’t know where to draw the line; usually the same people that accuse others of being bandwagon fans after the Habs start winning a bunch of games. There’s nothing wrong with complaining about recent results, but you have to believe. I’m disappointed in A LOT of people.

But that’s besides the point, the stupidity of people has never ceased to amaze me, so this whole bandwagon jumping thing doesn’t come as a surprise. What really bothers me is the whole point of this note: WHY THE HELL ARE THE CANADIENS PLAYING SO SHITTY?

This has been bothering me all week, and then I realized something. In the past few months when it has come to conversations about the Canadiens, I’ve heard more about people going out and clubbing with the Canadiens and people hooking up with Canadiens players than people discussing RELEVANT, HOCKEY RELATED THINGS. It’s gotten to the point where when I hear someone talking about the Canadiens, my first thought isn’t, “So did you watch the game?”, it’s “OHHHHHHHH so you were at Buonnanote this weekend too!??!”

This, my friends, is the problem. Our beloved Canadiens have let their success get to their heads (and I’m sorry but they don’t have much to be celebrating for yet). Why do you think so many players struggle here? The nightlife/social life for players must be straining on the players. Look at Ribeiro since he left the Habs, he’s putting up great numbers and he’s cleaned up his act from his coke binging days here in Montreal. The same can be said about Theodore, Souray and many other players. Our team is young, and they have money. What else are they going to do besides go out? Think of 5 of your friends, I guarantee you one of them has met/seen/banged a Habs player in the last month.

I’m fairly sure that there’s no other NHL team whose players party as much as the Habs do. What the hell are they going to do in St. Louis? Minnesota? There is no other city has a nightlife like ours, and our players take advantage of this badly. Carey Price should be chilling out at and regaining his composure after the way he’s been playing, not going out and living it up. What has he accomplished in his career up until now to deserve the praise that he’s been receiving? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING..

Case in point:

LOOK AT THE MOST POPULAR CAREY PRICE SEARCH, SHOCKING :O

I’m so glad that the Habs won last night, and I hope Halak can keep his form for awhile so Price can ride the bench for the rest of the season like he’s been riding Montreal’s most eligible single ladies for the past year.

So do our city a favor, if you see a Habs player out partying, go smack him in the face and tell him to wake the fuck before we become an even bigger laughing stock than the Leafs.
