Franz Ferdinand @ La Tulipe

The smash hit Scottish band rolls back in to town but this time at an intimate venue.

Tickets for Franz Ferdinand’s return to Montréal went on sale this past Friday for $35 but sold out in 15 minutes. Unlike the Spring 2006 show at Montreal’s Cepsum Arena which holds nearly 4000 Franz Ferdinandpeople, Franz Ferdinand chose the up close and personal venue of La Tulipe (capacity 530).

I was on hand at Franz Ferdinand’s last show including opening acts ‘The Cribs’ and ‘Death Cab For Cutie’. Fantastic show but crappy venue. For those who haven’t been to Cepsum consider yourself lucky. Cepsum (HEC’s Gymnasium) does not have the greatest acoustics and smells a little like a locker room. Fortunately they went from my least liked venue to my favourite. La Tulipe is a small concert hall converted from an old theatre. The sound is great and the stage is pretty much close to everyone. This will be quite the intimate performance.

Franz Ferdinand was the band which essentially turned me on to indie rock with great guitar riffs and fantastic lead vocals. Their 2004 self titled debut album is still one of my favourites, front to back a great album. If you haven’t heard this album I strongly encourage you to go out and pick up a copy.

I wasn’t able to get tickets from GEG but was able to get them from a scalper for $130 (a pair). If you would like to attend the concert I recommend you check out Kijiji (http://montreal.kijiji.ca) you can probably pick up tickets for about $60 each which is pretty reasonable in my opinion.

Duran Duran are an English pop rock band famous for a long series of popular singles, albums and vivid music videos, for which they’ve won two Grammy Awards. They were one of the most commercially successful of the New Romantic bands and a leading band in the MTV-driven “Second British Invasion” of the United States. Since the 1980s they have placed 21 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 and 30 in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, and have sold more than 100 million records. A selection of the band’s hit singles from the 1980s include, “Girls on Film”, “Rio”, “Hungry Like the Wolf”, “Save a Prayer”, “Notorious”, and the James Bond theme “A View to a Kill”. In the early 1990s, the band released, “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone”, and released “Sunrise”, and “What Happens Tomorrow” in the 2000s. “Falling Down” was released from their 2007 album, Red Carpet Massacre. Duran Duran were created by Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, with the later addition of Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Simon Le Bon, though none of the Taylors are related. The group has never disbanded, but the line-up has changed to include guitarist Warren Cuccurullo from 1986 to 2001, and drummer Sterling Campbell from 1989 to 1991. The reunion of the original five members in the early 2000s created a stir among the band’s fans and music media. Andy Taylor left the band in summer 2006, and London guitarist Dom Brown has been working with the band since.

Places to check out: Dans La Bouche

Walking on Mount-Royal during the sidewalk sale I spotted a trendy looking lounge. Decided I’d have to come back to check it out.

There are 2 things you should know about me. I’m the type of person who likes to try new things and I love to eat. This Tapas restaurant allows me to satisfy both those urges.

For those of you who don’t know what “tapas restaurants” are: “Tapas” is the name associated to a wide variety of Spanish appetizers. “Tapas restaurants” offer a wide variety of appetizers which patrons combine to make a meal. Tapas (North America) has evolved from Spanish dishes to all genres of cuisine.

Dans La Bouche offers plenty of creative little dishes; their menu is actually so appealing that I wasn’t able to order all tempting dishes. That problem was easily solved by revisiting the chic restaurant. From asparagus in a wine & goat cheese sauce to plain old chicken wings, their menu should please most palates.

I find that Tapas restaurants are best experienced with a nice bottle of vino. Luckily dans la bouche offers bottles at half price between 4 and 9pm. The downside of this is after 9pm bottles are a little over-priced.

Visible red brick throughout the restaurant with modern furniture and art work give dans la bouche that cold/warm trendy feel. I should also mention there is a large screen (which shows habs games) making this the ideal date spot when you don’t want to miss a game.

Montréal’s dans la bouche tapas restaurant/lounge bar definitely worth a visit. Chic atmosphere, funky foods well priced wines. Take your girlfriend(s)… I did.
